River Info

Paddling on the Wisconsin River can only be appreciated by actually paddling it, however we'll take a moment and paint a verbal picture for you.

  • Due to how shallow the river is there are very few motor boats, and those that are on the water are small aluminum fishing boats with small outboard motors
  • The shore is 95% tree lined
  • You'll see a lot of bird life, great for bird watchers
  • If you're on the water early enough in the morning you'll see deer, raccoon and beaver
  • You'll see hundreds of islands and sand bars during your trip, some with trees and others without
  • The water current moves from 2-3 miles per hour

Water Levels

In order to have sand bars available to camp on the river needs to be running below 15,000 to 17,000 cfs (cubic ft/sec).  You can find this information at the USGS and we'll be happy to assist you with suggestions on where to camp based on water levels.

Due to the size of the WI River it takes quite a bit of rain to effect its levels to the point that sand bars will be submerged.  However, it is important to pull your boats up out of the water because it's not unusual for water levels to fluctuate up to 6" overnight.

Finally, the WI River is a working river.  Meaning, there are 22 dams along its 435 mile length which open and close due to water levels, electric power needs and flood control.  Some common sense needs to be used while on the river.

  • Choose high ground to set your tent up on
  • Pull your boats up and keep objects that could float away from the edge of the water
  • Heed the advice given to you from your driver/guide

Have a Great Time on the Water!
